Yavapai College Adult Basic Education programs provide adults with instruction to improve basic reading, writing, and math and English skills. We also offer classes for students wanting to enter college to develop a career in allied health.
General Educational Development (GED) Study Program
- GED is a way for individuals to earn a high school equivalency diploma.
- Free classes, books, and materials are funded by the Arizona Department of Education.
- The classes are open to adults age 16 and older.
- Students attending the orientation who are 16 or 17 years of age must bring a separation notice from the last public or private school attended and have permission from parents or guardians to come attend the college.
- Home schooled students require a letter from the Department of Education.
English Language Acquisition for Adults (ELAA)
- The FREE non-credit ELAA classes are designed for legal residents of the U.S. who are learning English as a second language.
- Non-native English speakers with higher level English skills can contact Mary Verbout (928.776.2095) for ELAA information.
Registration and orientation for ELAA is required; please call 928.776.2088 (Prescott area) or 928.649.4564 (Verde Valley) to be added to the waiting list for the next orientation.
Adult Basic Education (ABE): Basic Skills Enhancement
- Sometimes adults who have a high school diploma find that they need a brush up or need to learn new reading, writing, communication, and math skills. Adult Basic Education: Basic Skills Enhancement
ABE Transitions Program
- This program assists individuals with making the transitions from ABE classes into Yavapai College or other training programs.
- Services include career and college exploration as well as scholarship opportunities.

GED Testing
- The ABE program does not run or administer the official GED test.
- Individuals with questions concerning the official GED test should contact the Assessment and Testing Center.
- There is a fee for this test.
- If you have questions concerning the results of official GED tests taken more than a year ago, please contact the Arizona Department of Education, Division of Adult Education.
- Individuals interested in taking a practice test can do so by contacting the nearest ABE/GED site.
