Vice President of Community Relations & Student Development
Rodney Jenkins is currently the Vice President of Community Relations & Student Development for Yavapai College. He relocated to Yavapai County from Lock Haven, PA where he was the Vice President for University Relations for Lock Haven University. Mr. Jenkins has over 25 years of experience developing and implementing effective public relations, communications, marketing, economic development, and fund development strategies.
Before relocating to Pennsylvania, Mr. Jenkins spent five years in the State of Georgia as the Director of Communications for Georgia’s Department of Administrative Services. He also worked as the Director of Communications & Marketing for the DeKalb County (Georgia) School District.
Mr. Jenkins began his career in the public sector providing in-home counseling and support services to children and families in distress. In the late 1980’s, after managing several successful local political campaigns for members of Cleveland (Ohio) City Council, he was appointed to become the Director of Communications and chief spokesperson for the Cleveland, Ohio’s City Council. Jenkins helped the members create better dialog with their constituency groups and the media.
As the Chief Public Affairs Officer for Cleveland, Ohio’s Mayor, Jenkins was the city’s chief spokesperson and managed several outward facing departments. He also developed and implemented proactive communicative strategies that improved both internal and external relations.
As the Corporate Marketing Manager with Cleveland Public Power, Jenkins’ primary role was to improve and expand corporate relationships with the public utility. He successfully helped sustain and improve the financial landscape of the utility. Today, Cleveland Public Power is one of the most successful municipal-owned utilities in the nation.
Mr. Jenkins is a dedicated husband, father, and man of God. He enthusiastically serves his family, community, and church. He has served on many community boards and commissions. Jenkins and his wife of 20 years currently reside in Prescott Valley with their two sons. He also has an adult son, and his first grandchild who resides in Toledo, Ohio.
Mr. Jenkins holds both a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Business Management and a Masters of Management degree (MBA) from David N. Myers University in Cleveland, Ohio.
At Yavapai College, Mr. Jenkins oversee: Regional Economic Development, Yavapai College Foundation, Alumni Affairs, Marketing & Communications, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, Athletics, Food Service, and Government Relations.
Vice President of Finance & Administrative Services
Clint Ewell became the Vice President for Finance & Administrative Services at Yavapai College in 2010. In this role, he serves as the college’s Chief Operating Officer with responsibilities including accounting, accreditation, budgeting, bookstore, facilities, grants, information technology services, institutional effectiveness and research, mail services, printing, purchasing, and strategic planning, During his tenure in higher education, Clint has also amassed experience successfully leading childcare, food services, human resources, and police.
In addition to leading his areas, Clint provides counsel to the President and his fellow Executive Leadership Team members, helping them to identify the strategies, and the related financial resources, that will differentiate the college and enhance student success.
Important accomplishments at YC include:
- two flawless HLC Accreditation visits
- the award-winning Instructional Cost Dashboard, a tool that has helped YC to reallocate over 3% of its budget every year to fund emerging priorities
- leading the design of the nationally recognized YC Promise, a self-funding Promise scholarship that have moved YC's completion rate into the top decile
- creating one of the first IACLEA accredited community colleges in the nation, demonstrating their adherence to best practices in community policing
- ongoing GFOA recognition for excellence in Financial Reporting and in Budgeting
- achieving some of the best-maintained college facilities in the country through investing in planned maintenance to lower the total costs of ownership
Clint received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Management from Northwestern University, and a Doctor of Education from the University of New Mexico.
When not in the office, you may find Clint pursuing one of his many hobbies including music, film, theater, swimming or hiking.
Vice President of Workforce and Health Science
Dr. Mercado brings with her a number of years of leadership in higher education, and healthcare, along with numerous affiliations in local, state, and national organizations, and has created strong industry and community partnerships to help develop the future workforce of Yavapai County.
She has been at YC since 2018, where she has held positions of Director of Nursing, Dean of Health Sciences, Math, Engineering, and Adult Basic Education, and Associate Vice President of Health Science. Through these roles, she has served on numerous college and statewide committees and groups, helped develop academic programming that filled employers’ needs, helped secure federal and state grants, and created partnerships with local businesses and organizations.
Prior to YC, Dr. Mercado served as the Associate Dean of Nursing at Moraine Park Technical College in West Bend, Wisconsin. She also has experience as a Family Nurse Practitioner and was a Wisconsin State Aide Evaluator.
Provost
Dr. Doug Berry joined Yavapai College in 2023. Prior to YC, he served as the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences in the Maricopa County Community College District. He previously served Paradise Valley Community College as the Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, responsible for planning, directing, evaluating, and providing oversight of the Academic Affairs division of the College.
He also previously served as Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs and the Accreditation Liaison Officer at Phoenix College. There, he oversaw 17 Academic Departments as well as the Academic Support Services. Additionally, he was the Project Administrator for the Title V Grant, Closing Achievement Gaps Through Holistic Support, Work-Based Experiences, and Equity-Minded Practices. He led the college through its HLC Open Pathways Accreditation and was a tri-chair for the Guided Pathways Initiative. Prior to that, he was the Dean of Academic Affairs at Paradise Valley Community College. He provided leadership for the Maricopa Transformation, HLC Accreditation, Career and Technical Education, and general education instruction. Additionally, he oversaw the Early College Programs and the Learning Success Center.
Dr. Berry also has numerous years of classroom teaching experience as an appointed full-time and adjunct faculty in the field of Psychology. He recently received the Employee Excellence Award from NISOD and was previously awarded the John & Suanne Roueche Excellence Award from the League for Innovation.
He holds a Ph.D. in General Psychology with a research emphasis in Emotional Intelligence and Team Cohesion from Capella University, his M.A. in Sports and Exercise Psychology from Argosy University, and his B.A. in Psychology from Olivet Nazarene University.
At Yavapai College he oversees: Business and Professional programs, Visual and Performing Arts, Humanities, English, Social Sciences, Math, Science, and Computer Science, academic operations such as Instructional Support, Scheduling, the YC libraries, and academic initiatives.
Chief Human Resources Officer
Dr. Janet Nix joined Yavapai College in 2023. Prior to YC, Dr. Nix was Chief of Organizational Development at IEHP, where she was responsible for the organizational development and operations of Human Resources.
She brings 30 years of experience to YC—15 years in education, and 20 years in healthcare. She is very experienced in organizational development, employee engagement, training at all levels in hospital and health systems environments, and many other areas of Human Resources functions.
Previously, Dr. Nix worked as the Chief Learning Officer for the Hospital Sisters Health System in Illinois, as Assistant Vice President of Learning and Curriculum at St. Mary’s Medical Center, and as Dean of Instruction at Victor Valley Community College District.
Dr. Nix earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare and Master of Public Administration from California State University, Sacramento and her Doctor of Educational Leadership from the University of LaVerne.
