Embedded Tutoring Program

The Learning Center's Embedded Tutoring Program provides faculty with the opportunity to integrate a student tutor into their course. Embedded tutors are not TAs and are not permitted to do work which you are being compensated for (i.e. lecture, grading, lesson planning, etc.)

Types of Embedded Tutors

The Learning Center’s Embedded Tutoring Program offers two main options for integrating a tutor into your course:

Canvas Embedded Tutors with Drop-in Support

In-Classroom Embedded Tutors with Limited Group Appointments

Embedded tutors are prioritized for courses in English, Math, and Science. If your department would like to increase tutoring hours or extend support to additional courses, you have the option to contribute funding each semester to the Learning Center. This will help us arrange for a tutor and expand the availability of tutoring services in your subject area.

Canvas Embedded Tutors with Drop-in Support

These tutors support your class through Canvas and offer drop-in services. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Class Access: Tutors are given access to course materials through Canvas to stay informed about the class.
  • Drop-in Availability: Tutors come from the Learning Center’s drop-in pool and are available for 10 to 18 hours per week, either in person at the Learning Center or virtually via Zoom.
  • Preparation Time: It typically takes 1 day to set up a tutor in Canvas, and 1 week for them to review the material if it falls within their general expertise. If no tutor is available, the Learning Center will explore adding one, based on funding.
  • Certification: All drop-in tutors either have, or are working towards, their level 1 College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Certification.

In-Classroom Embedded Tutors

These tutors provide in-person support but are limited by funding and need. As of Fall 2024, department funding will be needed to embed a tutor. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Class Attendance: Tutors attend up to 2 hours per week in your class, where they take notes, read assigned materials, and engage students in the learning process.
  • Appointment Availability: Tutors are available for up to four 30-minute Zoom group appointments each week.
  • Tutor Requirements: Tutors must be previous students of your class, selected by you, and must have completed the course with at least a B grade, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and your recommendation.
  • Preparation Time: Setting up and preparing an in-class tutor can take up to 3 weeks.
  • Faculty Responsibility: Faculty must provide weekly guidance on tasks for the tutor. Remember, tutors are not teaching assistants and cannot handle duties like lecturing, creating lesson plans, grading, or running the class.
  • Certification: All in-class tutors are required to obtain a level 1 College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Certification and participate in Learning Center and college-wide training.
