Service-Learning Projects in NSG 420 and NSG 450
The service-learning project is incorporated in both NSG 420 - Population Based Nursing in the Community, and NSG 450 - Nursing Leadership.
Service learning is more than just a requirement; it’s an opportunity for you to connect nursing field knowledge with real-world experience. These projects will allow you to engage with and contribute to your community while developing critical skills that are required in the field of nursing.
Here’s why completing your service-learning project is vital:
- Real-World Impact: Your work will address genuine needs in the community, making a tangible difference in people’s lives. It’s a chance to contribute to causes you care about and see the positive effects of your efforts firsthand.
- Skill Development: Through service learning, you’ll enhance skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership. These are invaluable in both professional and personal contexts and can set you apart in future endeavors in your nursing careers.
- Personal Growth: Engaging in service learning can broaden your perspective, helping you understand and appreciate different viewpoints and experiences. It’s a powerful way to grow as an empathetic and responsible nurse.
- Academic Enrichment: This project ties directly into your academic goals, providing a practical application of what you’re learning in the curriculum. It reinforces your understanding and helps you see the relevance of your studies in the real world.
- Community Connection: By participating in these projects, you’ll forge connections with local organizations and community members. These relationships can provide valuable networking opportunities and insights into potential career paths.
Your commitment to these projects reflects your dedication to both your education and your community. We encourage you to approach this opportunity with enthusiasm and an open mind. It’s a chance to make a meaningful impact and to grow in ways that will benefit you long after you have acquired your BSN degree.
Please begin the process of simply brainstorming areas such as populations within your community who can benefit from dedicated volunteer hours. After identifying the topic and population in need, implementation of both education and quality improvement processes will be required. With this, plan for the required 45 total project hours in each course. Project hours can include time spent communicating and/or planning with an organization, researching and preparing content, and developing and presenting your efforts as examples.
Faculty will be there to support your development of projects along the way! We are here to help you succeed and to make this experience as rewarding as possible.
