A. Employees
Employee eligibility for tuition waiver benefits, and the number of credit hours available, are based upon an employee's classification.

  1. Full-time faculty and staff, adjunct faculty and regular part-time employees are eligible for tuition waiver benefits as long as the employee is an eligible employee as of the first day of class
  2. Student workers are not eligible for tuition waiver benefits.
  3. Casual part-time employees are eligible only once they meet the annual requirements on length of service and minimum hours worked as defined below.

a. Effective on April 1, 2024, casual part-time staff who meet both of the below requirements on length of service and hours worked will be eligible for a tuition waiver benefit:

    I. One-year of continuous service at the College as of the measurement date (April 1st each year), and

II. 500 hours or more worked in the preceding twelve months
b. Employees who are notified by Human Resources that they are eligible for the tuition waiver will be eligible to use the benefits through March 31st of the following year as long as they remain continuously employed at the College, and are employed as of the first day of class. For example, an employee is notified by Human Resources on April 7th, 2024 that they are eligible for tuition waiver benefits through March 31, 2025 of the following year. The employee has the opportunity to use their waiver benefits in the Summer 2024, Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 semesters as long as they are continuously employed..
c. Annually each year on April 1st, all casual part-time employees will be evaluated for benefit eligibility based upon length of service and hours worked. It is possible that a casual part-time employee could be eligible one year, and then lose eligibility the following year because, for example, they did not meet the 500 work hours minimum test.

B. Spouses and Children
An employee's spouse and their children through the age 30 are eligible for a tuition waiver benefit once the employee becomes eligible and as long as the employee retains their eligibility as of the first day of class.

1. An eligible spouse is defined as an individual who is lawfully married to a College employee

2. An eligible child is defined as either the employee's natural born, legally adopted, foster, step-child or an individual for whom the employee can demonstrate guardianship, and who is age 30 or younger. Children are eligible to for the waiver if they are age 30 or younger as of the first day of class.

a. The IRS allows for tax-free tuition waiver benefits when used by an employee’s child who is age 24 and less, and who is claimed as a dependent on the employee’s tax return.

b. Children age 25 through age 30 are eligible for tuition waiver, but the dollar amount of the waiver benefit will be considered taxable income to the employee.

c. The amount to be taxed will be added to the employee’s pay check over set pay periods. See Examples of Tuition Waiver Tax Calculations in the reference section of this document for estimating tax liability when a dependent does not meet IRS-defined eligibility requirements.
