What is an internship?
- According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), an internship is a practice that develops student competencies beyond the classroom while preparing participants for skilled entry into specific industry sectors. This results in meaningful career pathways for students and a value-added hiring pipeline for employers.
- It includes anywhere from 5-20 hours per week working at an employer site over the course of a semester, collaboration with a faculty member, and college earned credit while gaining meaningful work experience.
- An internship can be paid or unpaid depending on the employer. Check out this article about internships.
What are the benefits of an internship?
- 80% of employers indicated that internships provided them with the best ROI as a recruiting strategy (2022 survey conducted by NACE).
- 60% of students who complete an internship convert to a full-time employee (NACE 2023 Internship & Co-op Report).
- As an intern you gain valuable professional experience that can be showcased on your resume as well as in your future career paths.

What could an internship look like?
Providing an experiential learning opportunity such as an internship for a student allows them to experience real work life. During this experience an intern should be helping in the organization by providing solutions to an existing issue, starting or completing a project that will further the company’s growth, or creating processes that will aid in the efficiency of the company. The intern should be applying the knowledge they learned in the classroom during their experience. An internship is all about learning experience and involves the supervisor providing ongoing constructive feedback in professional and personal skills. The experience should allow the student infinite learning opportunities and room to explore if this is the career path they would like to pursue.

What are the expectations for hosting an intern?
Yavapai College expects all our business partners to help in the learning process for the students. This means providing constant constructive feedback, participating in feedback forms from the college, allowing an infinite amount of learning opportunities for the students, confirming the number of hours the intern has worked at your site, and setting goals with the intern to allow for growth opportunities.
All business partners also need to provide a certificate of insurance to Yavapai College prior to hosting an intern. Certificates will need to be sent to procurement@yc.edu with the subject line: Internship Host | Share with Tabitha Fedina.
