Yavapai College is proud to announce the successful completion of its inaugural Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) program, designed to empower individuals in the Hispanic community to achieve their commercial driver's license (CDL). This innovative initiative, developed by CDL Instructor Alex Barber and VESL Program Designer Dawnette Polland, aims to bridge the language gap for non-English speakers pursuing vocational careers.

The VESL program was launched in response to a significant community need for qualified drivers in Yavapai County. With a large Hispanic population, the college recognized the importance of equipping aspiring drivers with the English language skills necessary to pass both the written and hands-on CDL exams.

During the past two years, the VESL program has provided tailored English language instruction focused on the specific vocabulary and skills required in the commercial driving field. Participants learn essential terminology related to vehicle inspections and safe driving practices while simultaneously gaining practical experience behind the wheel.

Candelario, the program's first graduate, exemplifies the success of this initiative. Through dedicated instruction and support, he completed the CDL training and passed the road test, marking a watershed moment for both him and the program. Barber noted, "Candelario's journey highlighted the importance of integrating language learning with vocational training, and his success has inspired many others in the community."

The program not only assists students in obtaining their CDL but also lays the groundwork for expanding VESL offerings to other vocational fields, such as nursing, emergency medical services, and welding. Barber and Polland envision adapting the VESL model for various career technical education programs, ensuring that more community members can access the training they need to succeed.

"We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow," said Polland. "The success of our VESL program is a testament to the desire for education within our community and the potential for future expansion."

Looking ahead, Yavapai College plans to continue refining the VESL curriculum and develop partnerships with local businesses to enhance job placement opportunities for graduates. The college aims to create pathways that allow participants to not only gain vocational skills but also contribute to the economic growth of Yavapai County.
