YC Visual Arts awards $19,000 in scholarships to 14 Yavapai County residents The Yavapai College Visual Arts Department has awarded $19,000 in scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year to 14 students from across Yavapai County who are pursuing visual arts programs of study.

The scholarship awards will help the new and returning students offset tuition, and in some cases fee and supply costs, said YC Art Professor Laura Bloomenstein. The scholarships are made possible by generous community donors who contribute to Yavapai College visual arts scholarships via the YC Foundation and from fundraising endeavors. Last year, the visual arts department invited artists of all ages to create 8 by 8 canvas artworks, which were exhibited at the YC Prescott Art Gallery and later sold, with proceeds benefiting art scholarships.

“We’re a program that wants to support our students and not with just money,” Bloomenstein said, noting that each of the 14 scholarship recipients is sponsored by and mentored by a YC faculty member.

Violet Guy of Prescott is among the latest visual art scholarship winners. The graphic design student said she is grateful to be studying something she loves. “And, I’m very thankful for this scholarship because it’s going to help me so much with achieving my academic and lifelong goals.”

Another scholarship recipient, Danielle Hook of Sedona, said she is pursuing a fine arts degree to help others discover joy and purpose through art. “Scholarships like this, allow me to focus on growing my career and dreams without having to worry about how I am going to pay off loans or keep a roof over my head,” she said.

Bloomenstein, who servies on the Art Department Scholarship Committee, said it’s rewarding for the team to make scholarship recommendations to the YC Foundation and watch the recipients grow throughout their community college journey. “Helping them be successful – that’s our goal – and it’s an honor and a privilege to help our students make their way into the wide world of visual arts,” she said.

Registration is underway for fall art classes that the college plans to offer in face-to-face, hybrid and online formats. The college is offering three free credits to all new and returning students affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
