Visual artistry blends with the sounds of the season Tuesday night, when community artists pair their skills with Yavapai College’s visual and musical artists for a multi-sensory celebration of Winter. Join Yavapai College’s Visual and Performing Arts Departments for Sights & Sounds of the Season, Tuesday, December 5, at 7 p.m., at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center.
“The idea to pair music and images together began last year with a conversation between [YC Music Professor] Christopher Tenney and myself,” Bryan Robertson, Yavapai College Visual Arts Professor, explained. Robertson and Tenney discussed the concept of synesthesia – when experiencing one sensation, like a sound, prompts another, like an image or a color. “Sights & Sounds is a culmination of this, and it creates an experience for the audience where instrumental and visual art blend into a multi-sensory experience.”
Sights & Sounds of the Season will feature Yavapai College’s concert bands and orchestras, directed by Tenney and Gary Flowers, performing melodies from holiday and winter classics as visual artwork is projected above. The images were created by an eclectic group of artists: YC faculty members and Visual Arts students, high school students from AAEC, BASIS Elementary School students and artists from around the country. “The artists were given the music to respond to, visually.” Robertson said, and the result is a wide range of images inspired by the melodies around it.
Sights & Sounds of the Season performs Tuesday night, December 5, at 7 p.m. at the Jim & Linda Lee Performing Arts Center on Yavapai College’s Prescott Campus.
