For the third straight year, Yavapai College is honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by bringing the community together on Saturday, Jan. 25 to celebrate unity and affirm the college’s commitment to belonging.
The celebration that in year one featured a unity walk for student athletes expanded in year two to incorporate the community for a unity walk and women’s and men’s basketball games. This year, a tailgate party has been added to the mix of unity events, as have some entertaining games during the trail walk and during halftime of both hoops contests versus conference foe Arizona Western.
The YC unity celebration kicks off at 11 a.m. with the walk and the tailgate simultaneously, both welcoming participants until 2 p.m. outside Walraven Gym (B-2) on the Prescott campus. Enjoy a dee jay and food truck during the tailgate. Walk-up registration for the unity walk is available between 10:30 and 12:30, also outside the gym.
Tip-off for the Roughrider women’s basketball game is at 2 p.m. The men’s game is scheduled to get underway at 4 p.m.
All are welcome to celebrate unity with YC students, faculty and staff. Walk participants will be entered into a drawing for a pair of free tickets to a forthcoming signature event in April at the Jim and Linda Lee Performing Arts Center and gain free entry to the unity basketball games. Unity celebrants can earn extra entries to the April JLLPAC event by participating in intermittent games offered along the campus trail and during basketball halftimes. An announcement about the special April event is coming soon.
To register in advance for the walk and secure a unity celebration T-shirt while supplies last, visit yc.edu/unitywalk. Proceeds of T-shirt sales will benefit YC Athletics scholarships.
