International Admission FAQs
Yavapai College resource websites:
Q1: What visa do I need to study in the United States (U.S.)?
An F-1 Student visa is required. Students with this visa are required to enroll in and complete full time course loads (at least 12 credits each Fall and Spring semester; 9 credits must be in-person instruction and 3 credits may be online). This is what it means to be an “in status” with an F-1 Student visa.
Q4: Do I have to prove English competency?
Yes, if you are from a country where English is not the primary language, you are required to pass an English competency test. We accept the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and Duolingo.
- Pass the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) and have the testing agency send the scores directly Yavapai College (school number 4966).
- For details: TOEFL and Prepare for TOEFL
- 61 or higher on the internet-based test
- 173 or higher on the computer-based test
- 500 or higher on the paper-based tested
- Pass the Duolingo English test with a score of 90 or higher.
- Send your test scores to isadmission@yc.edu.
Q6: I am in the U.S. attending a U.S. college/university. Do I have to pass an English competency test?
If you have passed at least two semesters of English Composition courses at a U.S. college/university, send an unofficial copy of transcript to isadmission@yc.edu for an initial review. An official final transcript may also be required. Official transcripts must be sent directly to Yavapai College, 1100 E. Sheldon St., Prescott, AZ 86301. It will be reviewed to determine if the English competency test can be waived.
Q9: What is a financial guarantee and is it required?
A financial guarantee is required by the U.S. federal government and Yavapai College to ensure a student has sufficient funding to cover all possible costs for living/studying full time in the U.S. for one academic year (Fall and Spring semesters). The financial guarantee covers estimated costs for tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, personal expenses, and transportation.
Some Yavapai College selective admission programs have additional costs related to their program, including Nursing, Gunsmithing and Aerospace Science.
Q14: Do I have to file any federal or state tax forms as an international student?
All international students must file a Form 8843 with the IRS before the deadline. This form is required for all internation students, even if you did not earn any income. If you’ve earned an income during the tax year, then you will need to file tax returns. Yavapai College staff are NOT permitted to assist any student with any IRS tax form preparation or tax-related questions. Information about how to access tax forms will be sent to your scholar email. Any questions or concerns should be directed to a certified tax preparer or a local IRS field office.
Q23: What programs may I study?
In order for a program to be eligible, the program must be a minimum of 16 credits and cannot be fully online. This means that some of our Degree and Certificate offerings are not available for international students with an F-1 student visa. Click on the link to view the College Catalog and select Degrees and Certificates for details. If you have questions about available programs for international students, email isadmission@yc.edu.
Q24: Can my foreign postsecondary college/university classes be considered for transfer credit?
A: When you provide transcripts from foreign colleges/universities to Yavapai College, they will be reviewed. If determined that the classes could be considered for transfer credit, you would contact any of the Yavapai College-approved foreign credential evaluation services to discuss the cost and turnaround time. You would request one evaluation report to be sent to Yavapai College, 1100 E. Sheldon St., Prescott, AZ 86301, and one evaluation report sent to yourself. See the attached list.
Q26: Can I get financial aid as an international student?
No, international students are not eligible for Federal financial aid. You may wish to pursue financial aid in the form of other types of scholarships and are welcome to pursue that possibility once you enter the U.S. and register for classes at Yavapai College.
Q27: When can I meet with an academic advisor and register for classes?
When international admission requirements are completed, the Registrar's Office will notify an academic advisor. The academic advisor will email you and review any testing requirements, help you choose a program of study available for international students, and register for classes. You must attend fall and spring semesters, enroll in and complete at least 12 credit hours each semester. A minimum of 9 credits must be in-person classes.
