Residency Requirement

Students who would like to initiate a review of their residency status should complete and submit an online Residency Review Request and upload a copy of their current driver's license or state ID (select "Tuition/Residency Audit"). Submitting a request does not guarantee in-state status.

To start a residency review request:

  • click on the myYC button on the YC homepage to log in your account
  • click on the green Students icon and then select My Student Profile
  • the Residency Review Request Form is located in the section under your picture

USA AZ flagsAttention: Military Veterans

For immediate reclassification to Arizona in-state status for tuition purposes provide Yavapai College with:

  • A copy of your Honorable DD-214 Member 4 document

AND

  • A valid Arizona Voter Registration card, OR
  • A valid Arizona Driver's License

Bring your document(s) in person to the Admission office at the Prescott Campus at (928) 717-7777 or take a legible, clear picture with your phone or scan in the appropriate document and upload using our Secure Upload Link. Select "Tuition/Residency Audit" for delivery.

Based on the Choice Act, a veteran or spouse/dependent of a veteran discharged with active duty service of 90 days or more AND is using VA Chapter 30, 31, 33, 35 benefits or the Fry scholarship at Yavapai College may also qualify. Call 928.717.7613 for more information.

Residency Requirements (non-military)

The requirements to establish residency for tuition purposes are independent from those of other types of residency, such as voting or holding public office. A resident for tuition purposes is someone who meets the requirements set forth for in-state status as defined in the Yavapai College General Catalog and summarized herein.

The rules and regulations for establishing residency for tuition purposes are defined by Yavapai College, which is authorized by the Arizona Legislature and state statutes (sections A.R.S. 15-1801 through 1807) to provide classification for a tuition differential between resident and non-resident students.

Tuition classification as a resident at Yavapai College does not mean that a student will be classified as a resident when transferring to any other Arizona university/college.

Students must provide clear and convincing evidence to meet these four (4) requirements:

  • 1. U.S. Citizenship: Most students who are not a citizen, a legal resident of the U.S., or who are without lawful immigration status are not entitled to classification as resident or “in-state” for tuition purposes in Arizona. Yavapai College will automatically certify citizenship of students with an approved FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Full list of acceptable Citizenship Documentation

    • If you are a non-citizen who attended an Arizona high school for at least two years and graduated from an Arizona high school, you may be eligible for in-state tuition. Upload a photo ID using the yellow “Secure Upload Link” below and send an official final transcript from your Arizona high school to: Yavapai College Office of the Registrar, 1100 E. Sheldon St., Prescott, AZ 86301

    • DACA students who attended an Arizona high school for at least two years and graduated from an Arizona high school may be eligible for in-state tuition. Upload a photo ID using the yellow “Secure Upload Link” below and send an official final transcript from your Arizona high school to: Yavapai College Office of the Registrar, 1100 E. Sheldon St., Prescott, AZ 86301
  • 2. Physical presence (12 Months): To be eligible for classification as a resident for tuition purposes, you must provide clear and convincing evidence of continuous physical presence in the state of Arizona for the 12 months (domicile year) prior to the term in question. This presence must be combined with clear and convincing evidence of intent to establish a domicile in Arizona beyond the circumstance of being a student. Full-time student status at any Arizona post-secondary institution or combination of institutions negates the use of that time to meet the physical presence requirement.
  • 3. Intent to establish a domicile: Evidence of intent to be a resident of this state (establish domicile) is demonstrated by the absence of ties to your former state of residence. Documentation of intent to become a resident must start at the beginning of the domicile year and be maintained throughout that year. Examples of evidence include: replacing former state driver’s license with Arizona Driver’s license (or state ID if no former driver’s license exists); Arizona motor vehicle registration to replace former state registration if exists; employment history; transfer of major banking services to Arizona; change in permanent address on all pertinent records; federal and Arizona state income tax records; Additional documentation may be requested.
  • 4. Financial independence: To be considered financially independent, you need to be self-supporting and not claimed as a dependent by your parents or anyone else on federal or state income taxes for the 12-month domicile year used to demonstrate physical presence above. Financial independence means that you meet your own expenses from self-generated funds under your control. Personal loans and gifts are not acceptable forms of income. Acceptable forms of income include: Pay stubs, W-2’s, financial aid, documented inheritance, Social Security benefits, Veteran’s benefits, Federal or Arizona State income tax. Additional documentation may be requested.

Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE)

The WUE tuition discount is provided to students who have documented with the Registrar’s Office their U.S. citizenship and residency from the state included in the Western Undergraduate Exchange consortium (WUE). Send a scanned copy of your driver’s license and birth certificate using the Secure Upload Link.

This program, sponsored by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE), provides opportunity for students from participating states to enroll in selected two- and four-year undergraduate programs at a reduced tuition rate.

WUE Tuition Rate Qualifying States

Residents of one of the following states may qualify for the WUE tuition rate at Yavapai College: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming.

WUE Restrictions

  • The WUE tuition rate applies when a student enrolls for seven (7) or more credits for a term.
  • The WUE tuition discount requires students to provide a Driver's License or other evidence of WUE eligibility. Students who do not wish to utilize the WUE tuition discount (for example, students who wish to establish in-state residency for tuition purposes), must contact admissions@yc.edu and request non-WUE status by the beginning of the subject term.
  • Residency: Receipt of the WUE tuition discount disqualifies students from using the period enrolled toward Arizona residency.
